Live In Ukraine (2 CD/1 DVD Set)ReviewsDespite the fact that some people didn't like tha fact that QUEEN was with another front man "replacing" Freddie Mercury (what is not really true), I found this union really good. QUEEN + PAUL RODGERS gave us a unique union with quality, performance, stage e a supperb world tour. I had the oportunity to see them alive in Sao Paulo, Brazil, in 26 November 2008. A perfect show. You have to know that Paul Rodgers is "simply" a unique singer. Don't try to compare him with Freddie. It is another singer, but a huge voice and talent. This is a great CD/DVD show. I also reccomend THE COSMOS ROCK CD, the QUEEN + PAUL RODGERS studio CD. A unique union, with Queen songs and, also, Free and Bad Company songs by Paul Rodgers. Special. I hope they join again in a short future. God save the Queen + Paul Rodgers! I kind of avoided this release at first because I was disappointed that there weren't more songs from the Cosmos Rocks album. Why should I get this album which is going to be basically a re-do of the Return of the Champions album from 2005? Well, I decided to get this anyway, and I am so happy that I did. This is almost a totally different listening experience than Return of the Champions was. Even where the setlist was similar, the renditions were changed. I still wished that they would have included some more Cosmos Rocks tunes, but over all I'm very happy with this purchase. Average Rating:![]() |

When it comes to taking logic-defying challenges, Queen have never fought shy: think Hyde Park, Latin America, Live Aid. All these years later, Queen are still living adventurously. Here's the case in point: just weeks ahead of the start of the band's 2008 Queen + Paul Rodgers' The Cosmos Rocks tour the band were approached to help Ukraine's Elena Franchuk ANTIAIDS Foundation reach out to the youth of the country with the message "Don't Let Aids Ruin Your Life"... |

Count John McCormack-The Final RecordingsReviewsAdmirers of this very major singer may well judge this to be the very best collection of John McCormack reissues on the market. It gathers together everything he recorded in the last twenty months of his singing life. Joining with accompanist Gerald Moore at London's Abbey Road Studios, he recorded sometimes as many as six items at a recording session. Gerald Moore, in his autobiography, recalled that John McComack was averse both to rehearsing and to recording more than one take of each song. Of the dozens of items here, almost all derive from a first take. Only once was there a tiny error. It occurred in the song "The Green Bushes". Listen carefully, and you will hear John McCormack begin to sing "So sweetly she sang" before correcting it, in the nick of time, to "So sweetly sang she". There was never a chance to do another take, but fortunately the item was eventually issued after McCormack's death. Indeed, there are many items here that were issued posthumously, and at least six published here for the first time. A couple of duets with Maggie Teyte have had little or no circulation. One of them here sounds to be copied from a slightly faulty but perhaps only existing copy. In the old-fashioned, sentimental and imprecise terminology of his day, McCormack sang from his heart, and aimed to touch the hearts of his hearers. It is fortunate that sound recording caught these performances so well, before emphysema silenced McCormack forever, and it is fortunate that Pavilion Records and supervisor Brian Fawcett-Johnston make them available today. By the time these performances were put to wax, McCormack's voice was twenty or more years past it's prime. But, unlike most classically trained singers, McCormack's vocal limitations appear to have encouraged a more musically adventurous approach to his singing. His later recordings have an immediacy and sponteneity that is absolutely unique to a singer of his era and training. His singing is, in fact, more like that of a "pop" singer, in that the voice takes a back seat to the phrasing, and ablility to convey a lyric with honest emotion instead of histrionics. The clarity of tone, and the ring of the high notes is gone in these recordings, but the "presence" of McCormack the songster is stronger than ever. The transfers are excellent, as we have come to expect from Pearl. While the fidelity is not what most expect from today's recording techniques, to my ear they are more satisfying. The voice is recorded up-front and very clearly, and we can revel in the knowledge that it was all originally recorded "honestly"; that is, without edits and without electronic alterations of any sort. McCormack was a great artist who never became boring. In this day of bellicose tenors who are content to sing the same repertoire in the same manner year after year, that is saying a lot. If McCormack's singing is new to you, do yourself a favor and get this one. Also pick up one of his youthful operatic recitals, and you will come to know just what a great performer and amazingly varied artist he was. Enjoy, for his like will probably not be heard again. Christmas Magic: A Holiday CollectionReviewsThe price of this cd makes it more than worth the price and it contains various well known Christmas recording stars. However, for some reason I don't find this cd as enjoyable as other Christmas collaborations made up of various recording stars. While all the songs are well known as are the performers the two are not matched up well. For example, Bing Crosby sings "Do You Hear What I Hear?" and Nat King Cole Sings "God Rest Ye Mery Gentlemen." While the songs are well sung these are not the first Christmas songs I associate with these singers. Now some people may appreciate that kind of variety but for me it had the same effect as listening to the b side track of the old 45 albums. There are some exceptions to my above review. Leontyne Price sings, as on every Christmas album, "Ava Maria" and Johnny Mathis sings "Sleigh Ride" and might I add he sings it beautifully! While there are some cd's or albums that I like to sing along with or listen to in the car I find this makes a better background music cd. I enjoy playing it while eating dinner with the family or with family get togethers during the Holidays. Average Rating:![]() |

Clash of the Titans (Snap Case)ReviewsGreat Movie, But surprised at the quality of the Blu-Ray! One star is even too much. Also where is the sound on the movie itself? The special features and new Clash of the Titans 2010 preview has sound, but not the movie. They need to re-release this and take time doing it so we can really see Hi-Def in all it's glory. This is VHS quality, if that. This review is for the Blu-ray edition of this movie and should not be mistaken for the movie itself. I rented the Blu-ray to see if the quality improvement was worth the purchase, it was not. The transfer from film seems to be from a worn copy there are obvious scratches and grainy appearance. The DVD version is cheaper and has the same quality. The movies is still a classic and is one of my favorites. I loved this movie when it came out. Probably saw it 5 times in the theater (I think I was 12). Great fun if you don't try to over analyze it. I won't necessarily talk about the movie here, but my rating reflects my love of the film. Just got the blu-ray yesterday and watched it last night on a 1080p 65" panasonic plasma. Over all, I think the transfer isn't bad. There are some grainy transfers (the opening scene starts this way, and I was thinking---oh this isn't going to be good). But some of the scenes are crystal clear with great definition. Be ready to see all the flaws that you wouldn't see in the DVD, given the mix of stop motion animation, mattes, etc. With the HD transfer, you'll see blue lines around mattes and background film. The most obvious thing to me was the burning "body" in the Joppa square is very clearly made of wood; it's almost painful to see how bad the prop is when shown in high def. You'll also notice how obvious the witches' prosthetic chins and eye covers are; again the price of having a more defined product. I actually enjoyed seeing how all the different techniques blended together to make the film, but it could be distracting to others. I'd say my biggest distraction with it all (and this showed in the theater and DVD) is how many "night" scenes were actually done during the day with a filter. I think it's a bit more obvious with the high def, but if you've seen this movie in any format you've seen it. The sound is decent; I thought it was a bit low on the volume; I had to turn it up a little louder than I normally do for movies. There are just a few extras included on the Blu-Ray: an interview with Harryhausen, and a Myth and Monsters Gallery. Also included is a promo for the 2010 Clash of the Titans. Not a lot of set up functions, but there are the most subtitle options I've ever seen on a movie (about 20). The book has some pictures in it, and a ticket for $7.50 to see the 2010 movie. I had a copy of the DVD at one point, and remember the transfer being terrible. This is much better, so for fans of the movie, I think it's definitely worth the upgrade. The movie arrived scratched and the case was broken. I attempted to contact the seller several times and they never replied. I will never purchase from Moviemars again. I first saw "Clash of the Titans" on television years ago when I was a little kid in the 80s. It became one of my favorite movies at that age along with other films such as "Empire Strikes Back", "Sleeping Beauty", "Lady and the Tramp", and "Neverending Story." The movie is about Perseus who is sent on a quest with some other guys for some reason I can't remember. He is in love with the princess Andromeda played by the beautiful Judi Bowker. Andromeda's previous lover is Calibos, who was turned into a beast for hunting Zeus's deer. He lives in the wilderness with a group of thugs. In his quest Perseus encounters giant scorpions, blind witches, and Medusa. He is aided by Athena's mechanical owl Bubo. This movie was a great movie to see when I was a kid. The movie was very suspenseful and had me on the edge of my seat. The scene that was particularly suspenseful was the scene where Perseus and his men encounter Medusa, who can turn people into stone who look at her. The idea of being turned into stone frightened me when I was a kid and I remember being horrified when one of Perseus's men is turned into stone. I highly recommend this film and it was a great movie to see when I was a kid. On top of containing the film, the DVD also contains a short piece where Ray Harryhausen talks about the making of the movie. Average Rating:![]() |
