Watersafe WS425W Well Water Test KitReviewsBasic, easy-to-use, overall pleased. A good budget way to get an indication of your water quality. If you truly suspect something foul in your water, you may want to spend the $100 and send a sample to an actual lab. Otherwise this should do the trick. I already had my well water tested professionally twice but it had been a couple of years and I wasn't sure how accurate the results were. I was pleased at how easy these tests were to run and feel confident (based on other tests) that the results are accurate. It works well to test water but it's a one time use and for the price it doesn't feel worth it. Go to the nearest Wally World or nearest Mega store to get a tester. The directions on this kit were very easy to follow and understand. This set of testing took mere minutes (with the exception of the bacteria test - 48hrs) to get results. We are wanting to buy a water filter, and as such wanted to test the water to figure out which would be best for our use. We had good results, all within the exceptable limits. However, if they had appeared off, we would have opted for the more expensive lab testing. Good product, easy to use, and the tests answered my questions regarding our well water. Microbiology (Flash Cards)ReviewsI expected more from this book, but i will see if it can help me. is there a way i can sell it back to you?? I have not read through it yet, but I usually rush into things and did not consider what this book was before I purchased it, its a small sized book (I thought it was a regular sized book when I purchased it) and its 243 pages. The title is correct, its only a quick review, its probably not good for studying, only getting the basics, probably good for people who don't study and need to do a cramming session before the test, do not buy this book expecting practice questions or in depth analysis. I'd imagine most microbiology courses for biology or science majors is going to require knowledge at a much higher level than what is on here. So maybe it would be good for a basic introductory course but for most it won't help and your time would be spent on better material. I'm in a very fast paced micro class. Our class is only 5 weeks long and we get the same amount of info as a normal length term. This book is going to be a life saver! I'm so glad I got it. And spending the extra $1 to see it and print some pages out on line while waiting for it to come in was a huge help, too. These are great flashcards unless you actually want to learn and pass your microbiology class. Not only is the content poor, several of the cards in my pack were improperly printed with half the text cut off. No wonder they come sealed in plastic at the bookstore, if I had had the chance to look at them before I bought them i would have known better. They do work well for leveling a wobbly table though. Microbiology flash cards expose the user to everything ranging from an introduction to microorganisms to a clear understanding of microbial diseases. These cards are useful in distinguishing the differences between viruses, bacteria, protozoa, and fungi as well as creating an understanding about the cause of the diseases and the methods to control them... |

The Standard Deviants - Super Science Pack (Physics 1, Biology, Chemistry 1-3) [VHS]ReviewsI love using this with my high school students. I lend out the Biology one to the Biology teacher, use snippets of the Physics one with my Physical Science students, and teach Atoms, Moles, and the Periodic Table with the Chem 1 video. We haven't gotten into the other two Chem videos yet. I think it's so corny it's well into the stupid-funny range, but my students like it. Be prepared to do a LOT of pausing, and I strongly recommend either finding an online study guide or watching and creating one before showing the video. It tends to move pretty fast. EXCELLENT for pre-test reviewing, or using small snippets to teach. I've seen better, but this is pretty darn good! Average Rating:![]() |

The Standard Deviants: Biology [VHS]ReviewsAdmittedly, this is not the most entertaining movie out there, but if you're watching a DVD called "Learn Biology", entertainment is not primarily what you're after, right? I watched this movie as the base of my studying to pass a Biology placement test for my return to college. I was not looking for entertainment...I was looking for a video that would CRAM a semester's worth of general biology into my head in two weeks. And that it did! I passed the placement test with apparently the highest score they've seen in a long time and am now heading to Anatomy & Physiology next semester. I was actually asked, "Are you already in the health or science fields? No? Then how did you get such a high score?" ***grin*** I didn't share my secret with them, but I am sharing it with you. I watched the DVD, paused it constantly and took notes. Then I watched it again. And again. No, not the most exciting thing, but I achieved my goal of testing out of General Bio, and that was what I needed this DVD for. I must admit that a better title for this DVD may be "Learn CELLULAR Biology" as that is all it focuses on. There is no discussion of the other aspects of Bio, like Evolution, Ecology, etc. But it does give a very thorough explanation of pretty much all facets of Cell Biology. It's a great addition to anyone's efforts to learn biology, and I highly recommend it for its educational value! I am planing for an MBA and need to take 2 tests, GMAT and TOEFL. As an international student, I always have problem understanding the reading comprehention passages, especially the terminology in science. I never have any experience in an English speaking classroom in my Bachelor degree. So this type of educational series is the best I ever come across. I don't need to know every single details, but I need the basic understanding of Biology. In my opinion, this Biology DVD is better than a high school classroom in my country. Of course, it's just 1-2 hours lesson, you can't condense every bit of details. But, for it's purpose, it does an exellent job. If you need details, you can buy text book and study from it. This DVD is a supplement, not a replacement. I used to spend hundreds of hours over 3 dictionaries and 3 encyclopedias, trying to find the passages I am reading on the GMAT, but I still understood only 35%. This DVD really helps me understand Biology much better. Sometime, you don't feel like you are studying, they use technique that keep you awakening, laughing and wondering what is next. The songs, graphic, funny stories they use fit very well together. Moreover, you can imagine spending hours reading text that explain the cell cycle, but you can watch this DVD for minutes and get the same understanding of the process in much shorter time. For more information about the contents of this DVD, you can go to [..] or to be specific for Biology go to[..] I also ordered more products from Standard Deviants. I hope there are more companies produce this kind of product in the future. This is a fun way to learn some topics in biology. The visual technique is excellent for helping me to memorize important topics into my brain. It's a good reference for AP Biology. However, I would not only use this as the primary source. I also used Biology by Raven's and for great test-like questions, I used The Ultimate Study Guide for Biology: Key Review Questions and Answers with Explanations Volume 1 isbn; 1933023007 Volume 2 isbn: 1933023015 Volume 3 isbn: 1933023023 These three study guides had similar questions to the AP exam. Raven' Biology is also needed because this helped me to build my foundation of knowledge in biology for the AP Biology Exam. This is a great intro to cells and cell structure. However, if you are using this for CLEP, be mindful that this tape covers only a relatively small portion of what is covered on the CLEP biology test. This is a MUST for anyone who is struggling to pass a Bio test. I can tell you it was a deciding factor allowing me to pass my Bio Clep test last month. It is supremely entertaining and covers key areas. I found that its focus on DNA and RNA were particularly key for questions I later encountered on the test. I would also recommend Jack Rudman's Biology review, REA's Problem Solvers book in Biology, and the Online Biology Book athttp://www.emc.maricopa.edu/faculty/farabee/BIOBK/BioBookTOC.htmlVoila! That is my formula - along with prayers - for passing the Bio test. Study hard. Average Rating:![]() |

The Best of Beakman's WorldReviewsBeakman's World is a fast paced crowd pleaser if a science video. It is pretty rapid fire, so it doesn't necessarily camp on a specific subject if your looking for a Bill Nye type video, but it is highly entertaining, with tons of experiments you can do on your own with either a classroom or at home. My class this year loved Beakman more than Bill Nye. I just wish there were more Beakman videos out there. But, a great video and wildly entertaining. This is a great DVD for any age. Beakman makes learning fun. I wish the earlier episodes were included. Like the one that explains where ear wax comes from . . .truly gross!! My husband and I used to love watching Beakman's world on Saturday mornings (as well as Parker Lewis Can't Lose), so this show obviously has a broad base. It is irreverant, and shows a more "urban" feel than Bill Nye The Science Guy but they are both cut from the same cloth. Quick cut edits, weird sound effects, snappy dialog, fun science. Toddlers wouldn't like or appreciate this or Bill Nye, but my kids (9.5, 8 and 5) all love both, and after watching this DVD, immediately ran outside to try out some of the experiments he showed them. Gotta love that! It is slightly dated (I think they talk about records or cassette tapes in the start of the DVD), but the science still holds, and there's nothing quite like Beakman and his friends! [5 stars for the program, 4 for the DVD, sight unseen, because they tell me there isn't enough Josie] I wasn't going to review this item, as I felt there was no need. I only came here to buy this item for my age 6 son, and scanned the reviews in hope that one might contain information on which episodes/excerpts were included in this video. But I stumbled on a review that was just WRONG, and saw that others had marked it as helpful, and then thought of the children who would be deprived of this opportunity to learn AND have fun which is NOT AVAILABLE ANYWHERE ELSE. I COULD NOT leave this alone. While I replied to the review, THIS WAS NOT ENOUGH. A shortened version of my reply: [that other review]"...two puppet penguins...when one stated that he was "younger and sexier" than the other, I began to worry." And it goes on. Whoever put this DVD together obviously made a major error, in that this joke was now made out-of-context in editing. Bearing no real sexual content whatsoever, it's a biological/genetics joke: said penguins are *twins*. As such, any reference to difference in age or physical appeal is essentially moot. Therein lies the joke. My sister was 3 when she heard this joke, and she got it immediately. She recently credited this show with getting A's in COLLEGE science classes, having had no real immersion in science in between. My grandmother, wife of a minister, and mother of 3 others, was also tickled pink when she heard this joke. These penguins typically represented "what-not-to-do", much like "Mr. Lundt" from Veggie Tales, and all viewers come away with the impression to avoid their behavior and actions, now and always. ""Beakman" was obnoxious..." ...[blink, blink].... I truly believe that anyone who reads this line should go look up that word. "Oscar the Grouch" and countless other children's characters ARE obnoxious, even sometimes when they're put forth as "the good guy". Nye is obnoxious as often as not. "Beakman" more than anything else was "put-upon", trying to teach both the viewers and the other characters fun things about science, but fighting an uphill battle all the way. The "talking hands" are used on purpose to direct the eye and to capture and keep the attention of viewers under age 10. Dozens of studies show that this also helps children retain what they've just heard--often for the rest of their lives. It's especially helpful for children *and adults* with everything from A.D.D. to dyslexia to focal seizures. It's how many oral-tradition cultures kept their histories alive and INTACT for milennia. The "tattooed mouse" is a favorite of other reviewers, and made the top 20 in favorite children's characters numerous times and in widely varied places. The actress who portrays the much-missed Josie (who made the top TEN above) continues to give award-winning performances in vastly differing genres, such as being singled out for excellence in both good and bad reviews of The Brady Bunch Movie. Millions worldwide agree that: the original Sesame Street was the best overall childrens' educational show ever the Letter People was the best preschool childrens' educational show for learning to read, ever the Electric Company was the best age 6+ childrens' educational show, for learning to read and for gaining command of English, ever Math Net was the best childrens' educational show, for learning the basics and cultivating interest in math, ever THIS SHOW was the best childrens' educational show, for learning the basics and cultivating interest in science, ever I loathe half the children's programs currently running. My family and I have only agreed on 7 things EVER; this show was one of them. If I could afford it, I would buy a few hundred copies of this DVD to give to all I know with children and to local schools and children's centers and more. Naturally I second the motion made by reviewer "Dakota" (and others) to press the issue and get the entire series out on DVD. I was in my teens and had been in advanced science classes from 1st grade on, and still found this program to be helpful, informative, and entertaining enough to write all that I have here (and could easily add more) and to seek out this program for my son. Regardless of where you purchase "Beakman" DVD's or how much you pay for them, GET THEM if you have children of any age at home. This guy is the best thing to get preteens and teens a like, to enjoy the world of science. easy experiments with house hold items. Great for pearant to spend time with their kids on those day your stuck in the house and you keep hearing "I'm Bored!" my two year old enjoys them also. I highly recomend this DVD and anything else that is Beakman's world!!! Average Rating:![]() |

Free Willy 2: The Adventure Home (Snap Case)ReviewsHow many times has a part 2 or part 3 of a movie leave you wishing you had only seen the first one? It is not this way with Free Willy 2 and Free Willy 3. Both movies were able to continue on with the main theme and the main actors from Free Willy #1. The show just picked up where it left off and both were really enjoyable. The show also was able to slide in some knowledge of orcas into the show and left you feeling like you could have starred in the movie too. I'd advise anyone who enjoyed the first Free Willy to see the other two. I have not seen the last one . It does not have the same characters in it, but I'll give it a chance. Jesse becomes reunited with Willy three years after the whale's jump to freedom as the teenager tries to rescue the killer whale and other orcas from an oil spill. This movie is just as good as the original. This movie also differs from the first movie, in the fact that it shows willy with his family, it shows orcas in a pod, and it shows their relationship as a family. If you want the excitement and thrilling adventure that you got in the first movie, see this movie. Hello. Remember my review of Free Willy last month? Next, I am going to review the sequel, Free Willy 2: The Adventure Home. Picking up two years after the first film, Jesse (Jason James Richter) and his foster parents Glen (Michael Madsen) and Annie (Jayne Atkinson) learn from Dwight (Mykelti Willamson) that Jesse's mother who abandoned him eight years before died in New York City, leaving him devastated. They also learn that Jesse has a half-brother Elvis (Francis Capra) who is prone to telling lies and annoying Jesse. The entire family went on a camping trip where they are reunited with Randolph (August Shellenberg) and the two go on a whale watching ride where Jesse meets Randolph's goddaughter Nadine (Mary Kate Schellhardt) and the group reunite with Willy (Keiko) and his siblings, Luna and Little Spot. Jesse and Nadine start to show feelings for each other. An oil tank nearby scrapes on an underwater rock and spills oil all over the area and Luna, Willy's sister gets covered in the oil, a small amount of which gets in her lungs. After the group heals Luna and tries to clean the oil spill, the social worker who claims to be protecting the whales is really plotting to ship them off to an amusement park and were exposed by Jesse and Elvis. Unfortunately, the oil tanker explodes and sets the spill on fire which leads to a death defying situation then the three get trapped by the flames. A helicopter rescues Nadine and Elvis, but Jesse falls back into the water and Willy comes to the rescue, again. In the end, Jesse learns to accept Elvis for who he is despite his annoying ways, and Elvis becomes more honest and tells Jesse that although their mother had to abandon him, she still loved him and bitterly regretted not being able to care for him. This helps Jesse move on and Willy and his siblings were reunited with their mother. This entry teaches a powerful lesson to oil companies to always use two layers of metal for the bottom in order to prevent an oil spill. Most of the main cast returned for this sequel with some newcomers, especially a new director, Dwight H. Little (that's right, the director of Halloween 4: The Return of Michael Meyers). All this makes it the most serious of the franchise and definitely the best. I am surprised it faced competition with Batman Forever and only performed half as well as its predecessor in the U.S. box office. If you see this at a video store, I would check it out. I watched all three 'Free Willy' films over the course of a couple of days and for me this film, the second in the series is the weakest of the trilogy. This film seemed a little preachy at times, but it's a safe bet for the kiddies! The DVD transfer is very good and I rate this 2 1/2 stars. Another great movie to follow the first movie! Anyone with kids should get this movie, they'll love it! Average Rating:![]() |

Where Did I Come From?ReviewsMy parents showed this to me when I was 7 and they were expecting my younger brother. I'm now 30 and 23 years later, I still have the vivid memories of a bed bouncing up and down and swimming sperm with top hats racing to meet an egg dressed up as a bride. If you don't mind your kids having such images left permanently in their minds and leaving them only more confused about the birds and the bees process, then by all means, show them the film! Had this as a VHS for my kids, now bought DVD version for my grand daughter. Great video to help kids understand where they come from. I had this movie on VHS years ago for my kids to learn where babies come from and it is the most perfect educational tool ever! I bought it for my daughter to show our grandkids. Both our girls remembered the movie and were glad we got a copy for them to share with their kids. I recommend it for all kids, from very young to older kids. It's a bit juvenile for teens, but it still teaches them what they need to know. Good video to sit down and talk to kids in their early development process. It also gives parents the opportunity to communicate to them on what they have seen. Expect giggles and laughter but overall a very educational tape to help the children understand sexual relationships and where babies come from I got the movie and book as a "pack" after our 5 year old asked about sex and babies. Yes SEX and babies....horrifying thought isn't it. I enjoyed how it explained what really happens to make a baby. How it takes a man and a woman, sperm and eggs etc. And I liked how they used "LOVE" in a lot of it. It was all about the man and the woman loving each other. :) What I could have done with out was the detail about sex. To me they just went a little to far...I would have left it at the man and woman are naked and very close to each other...end of story. The movie however goes into detail about the man putting his penis into the woman's vagina and wiggling around. Then explains how it has the same feeling as being tickled. Its one thing to know that "sex" is the reason babies are made, but not a manual for how it's done. So overall I give this 4 stars, but I would have cut out the one part. Luckily in the book you can skip over it (until they learn to read anyway) Average Rating:![]() |

The Relic [Blu-ray]ReviewsIf you watch this Blu-ray on a small plasma or LCD HDTV it may look okay but I can guarantee if you are projecting on a 120" screen you are going to hate this version. I was hoping that somehow the producers would find a way to brighten the image enough to make details missing on the already too dark DVD visible but alas the original dark cinematography of the movie can not be remedied. The sound was okay although I felt the dialogue was too low comparable to the cranked up sound effects. All in all a big disappointment. As I am sure anyone reading this review has seen the movie, I will primarily focus on the BD. Though it must be said, "The Relic" has held up nicely over time. The story of a monster on the loose in a museum, is the stuff of Saturday afternoon creature features. Complete with a pretty young scientist, and a hard edged cop, all spouting off wonderful creature-feature dialogue about old legends and genetic mutation. What makes the movie work so well is a very nice prestigious cast: Penelope Ann Miller as anthropologist Margo Green, Tom Sizemore, reminding us why he was such an edgy leading man despite his personal demonds, as detetective D'Agosta. Supporting players like James Whitmore, Linda Hunt, and a wonderful cameo by the late Audra Lindley as a foul-mouthed coroner make this the classy gala affair the movie centers on, and makes the proceedings feel more convincing and grounded than they are. Above all, the A-movie production values, courtesy of Gale Ann Hurd give the movie some fabulous special effects both CGI (which have held up nicely) and awesome creature effects by the late Stan Winston. Peter Hyams also managed to get the clearance to let this movie be a hard R-rated affair with lots of gore, decaptiations, and body splitting carnage. Very fun, guilty pleasure of a movie...which while not a runaway hot, still did better than anyone expected and it has developed a loyal cult following. The SD DVD was fine, but had many problems such as compression noise and the low bitrate couldn't handle the crushing shadows and blacks director Peter Hyams employs. It is all the more of a treat that the Blu-ray is given first-rate treatment by LionsGage. "The Relic" is a dark movie. Very dark. Peter Hyams, acting as his own DOP, employs heavy shadow and even in lit scenes, nothing burns brighter than 12 watts it would seem. This has been a common complaint of the movie as it obstructs seeing the creature or the terrific CGI. On the documentary and commentary, included for the first time on this disc, he makes a great case for why he did it this way. His point is about focusing on natural light only, even when it is too dark, such as the scenes in the tunnels where the police are tracking the beastie...he points out that if they need flashlights to see, why not only show thw audience what is visible by flashlight or other available lighting. This makes a good point and the movie would not have been as effective had it been subjected to increased lighting. It allows us to feel like we are in the dark with them, not knowing what lurks off the light of our flashlight. The Blu-ray transfer makes for a real treat. The MPEG 4 AVC encode allows the blacks and shadows to render more detail and keeps it true to Hyams' vision. There is no artificial brightening or porcessing used. Hyams made his case in my mind, and the tranfer is free from all of the DVD's flaws, and it looks marvelous. The CGI effects look detailed and textured. There are crushed blacks, but they are from the original master, and not the BD encode. In short, it looks the best it ever has since the editing bay. The sound is a powerful DTS HD-MA 7.1. It is a house-shaking, booming, exhilarating mix that is immersive (we can hear dripping water from every channel) with wonderful ambient and directional effects, but once the monster mayhem begins, the movie is full of devastating bass and exciting effects as the creature lumbers, runs, rips heads off, gets set on fire, etc. It is a terrific transfer. The disc has spare feature, but LionsGage recorded a new commentary by Peter Hyams, a new documentary on Hyams, and the theatrical trailer. These items are sure to please fans of the movie. The price is right at $10-12 bucks at most retailers for this first-rate catalogue title. I have watched mine 4 times already. If you love the movie, this is a MUST own. If you love creature features, this one is first rate with plenty on monster gore for fans. If you are a sci-fi movie collector this is one that you need to get. The monster is gorgeous ! Ever think back to a film from the 90s, and you remember liking it, or at the very least enjoying it, but upon rewatching it you can't help but say out loud, "What the hell was I thinking?" If you haven't done that lately, try The Relic on Blu-ray. At the time it seemed to have all the elements for an interesting and exciting thriller, but looking back now it feels like it plods along at an unforgivably slow pace, all the while drowning in expositional talk as if the audience can't keep up with its simple story. A wild, mythical beast linked to an ancient artifact makes a new home in Chicago's Museum of Natural History. Tie in a theme of superstition's validity and the opening of a big exhibit centered on that, and you...still have a really simple story. The film doesn't just miss on Blu-ray though, even in its theatrical release it failed to recoup even half of its $70 million budget. Dr. Margo Green (Penelope Ann Miller) has been competing with Dr. Lee (Chi Moui Lo) for funding on her projects for the last few years, but until now it's never seemed like she was facing any serious threat. But Dr. Lee has turned his sights on her grants and now she must scramble to impress the well-to-do Blaisedales (Francis X. McCarthy and Constance Towers) at the big opening of the museum's superstition exhibit. The opening night is in danger, however, as a recent delivery to the museum seems to have brought with it some violent monster that delights in snacking on people's brains. To the monster's credit, it chose a pretty perfect snacking spot, assuming you believe that museums attract smart people. In this film, that doesn't hold true though, as everyone seems to run about with their heads cut off in a panic. Will we make the event on time? Will the monster eat us? Will we adequately spout off all the necessary lines to keep the audiences clued in and interested? No. No, for most. And no. To help solve the murders, Lt. Vincent D'Agosta (Tom Sizemore), the epitome of cop clichés as he voices all his insecurities betwixt little factoids that prove relevant to the story in some strange way, locks down the museum and finally gets his chance at snagging the monster at the museum's opening. How many cops, researchers, dogs must die before Vincent can do his job? Quite a few. Critic Leonard Maltin described The Relic best when he called it `Alien in a museum'. While that description is apt, it oversimplifies the situation. Alien was a masterpiece of science fiction, cinematography, and tone. Would it still have been as great if you took the events of the film out of a small space trawler and put it in a wide open field? Not really, though Aliens found a perfect balance somewhere in between. Alien paired its terrific monster effects with the claustrophobia of a small ship. You couldn't run. You couldn't hide. It was a genuine feeling of kill or be killed, a concept few films can reproduce because usually running is a pretty safe and viable option. But The Relic? It has no such bonuses to boost its story. The few times when it does attempt to instill a sense of predator and prey in a small area, the cinematography ruins it by never framing it in such a way that the inherent panic works its way from the screen to the viewer. Conceptually it's `Alien in a museum' but in terms of execution, that description is insulting to Ridley Scott's superior film. The Relic amounts to little more than a cheap monster-of-the-week genre film that only fans will really love. Blu-ray Bonus Features Director Peter Hyams gives a rather self-indulgent audio commentary, suggesting that he thinks he might have created a brilliant thriller - he didn't, but there's no point in trying to argue with an audio track. If you couldn't get enough of Hyams there, then stick around for the brief interview featurette where he doubles back on the material in a few choice soundbytes. Just like with the purchase, only fans will really care enough to go that extra mile. This is an all round good movie. It is a keeper, which can be watched over and over again without getting bored. An anthropologist drinks something a witch doctor gives him. Big mistake! Then the killings begin by a strange looking beast. The the beast hopes on a boat bound for the USA and a museum. The museum curator is a really great actress. She is now playing on CSI: Los Angelos. Average Rating:![]() |

A monster runs amok in a Chicago museum on the very day the institution is holding a glitzy reception. Naturally, the museum bosses want to go ahead with their public relations even as the creature is decapitating victims... |

Never Cry WolfReviewsThis is an absolutely amazing film with incredible footage. I wish this film would enter into the public conciousness when it comes to issues related to recovering the wolf population. This creature is one of the most demonized and misunderstood in the animal kingsom. The needless slaughter of a valuable part of God's creation needs to be addressed and reversed. This film should be a must see for all. Its a great movie and draws on the interplay between a go for it bruser of a wild man of the north (the pilot) and a gentle city man who is truly plucked out of suberbia and thrown to the wolves. His story of personal development as he meets inuit people, faces the long Alaskan night, suvives against all tthe odds, and comes to love the place, the people, and the Wolves, discovering himself in the process. The sceen on the flight out to the drop zone when the engine stalls over the white out mountainous wilderness is clasic. A study of charcter, and characters! God bless. Alan incent This is a lovely film. That is proven by the fact that it must be 20 years ago that I watched it, only once, and I still remember some of it quite clearly. I was reminded of it by an amazon friend's review of a mouse trap; the review included rodent cooking recipes. Why 'spoiler'? Well, some people's appetite may be spoiled by the idea of eating mice. Also, the idea of mouse consumption is one of the highlights and lessons of the film. So I am reducing the suspense here. The hero, a zoologist, is dispatched to the far north of Canada to research the effect of wolves on the caribou population. He finds out that wolves actually live on mice. In order to prove the possibility that a large mammal can live on mice, he does it himself for several weeks. We watch him preparing mouse stew, mouse satay, and so on. His access to spices is naturally limited, so one can imagine a far larger range of dishes with proper shopping opportunities. Another situation that stuck to my memory was related to translation, one of my permanent subjects of interest. We see our hero in the process of preparing his lunch, when a group of local people (what am I expected to call them?) walks by. They start investigating what the white man is doing. One of them translates. The leader of the group, something of a venerable chieftain, embarks on a long monologue. The zoologist asks: what does he say? The translator says: he says, good idea. The prototypical 'lost in translation' situation. I have experienced it so often! This video is excellent! The cinematography is superb, combined with a story that starts slow but builds speed as it progresses. I do not have children, and I enjoyed this movie immensely. But should you nhave children, they would like it as well. Just a really great, wholesome movie that anyone from 5-100 will like. Especially those that love wilderness or specifically Alaskan type wilderness stories. Remniscent of Jack Londons books, but with a more modern storyline. With the price at Amazon, you just can't go wrong. And their service is incredibly quick. Don't even bother with ---Bay, Amazon.com is the way to go. I will now get all my movies through them! Tulpan is a great foreign film. Filmed by a Russian filmaker, set in the Tibetan Steppes, this movie is another great film. Snow Walker is a film to be seen. Set in the 1950's, another adventure set in the Alaskan wilderness. Filmed by the same filmaker as Never Cry Wolf, I believe???? Farley Mowat??? Anyway, a plane crashes and the pilot finds his true self with a native American girl he crashes with (his plane). Another modern western is Tom Berenger in "Last of the Dogmen". A little sappy perhaps, but a neat little story. Sorry to digress from the original subject, "Never Cry Wolf". Great little movie, great price. Check it out for the family or for yourself and significant other. I believe most if not all of these films are available on Amazon.com at great prices and excellent service. Don't bother with the lousy competition! Amazon is the way to go!!!! 12-24-2009 Marvin L. Sloan I still like The Snow Walker by the same author the best. This film is an interesting sutdy of nature in the north. A very good film. Average Rating:![]() |
